How to protect your TikTok account

Every day, millions worldwide watch short-form videos on TikTok and share their own clips. Some do it to be creative and sociable; others are seeking popularity. But as in any online community, TikTok is not just a platform for video creators and bloggers. It is also home to haters, spammers, scammers and hackers.

Because a TikTok account is a goldmine of the user’s sensitive information, cybercriminals are lured to find ways to circumvent its defenses and get in.

The following red flags may indicate a compromise and should urge you to take immediate action:

  • Your TikTok password, security email address, or phone number tied to the account has been changed.
  • Your username or nickname has been modified.
  • Someone is removing or adding videos behind your back.
  • Messages are being sent without your permission.

Below is a summary of TikTok security best practices:

To protect your account:

  • Reset your password.
  • Link your phone number.
  • Remove suspicious devices.

1. Use a Strong Password

No matter how vanilla this recommendation may sound, it’s the stronghold of your account’s intactness. In addition to making your password at least 12 characters long, include special characters (%, $, &, etc.), uppercase letters, and numerals.

2. Change Your Password Regularly

If TikTok’s databases are ever breached, the strong password you just created may end up on that list, connected to your username. To keep your account protected, change your password regularly

3. Turn on Two-Factor Authentication

Although a strong password is a good start, two-step verification (2SV) adds another layer of security to your accounts by asking you to prove your identity when logging in from a new or unrecognized device. For TikTok, that means you will receive a verification code via text or email that you need to use to continue signing in.

4. Manage Devices Connected to Your Account

Security isn’t always about unknown devices — sometimes it’s about old devices or devices borrowed from friends or family members. Although the security alerts feature notifies you of strange activity, it won’t let you know about every single device you’ve ever used TikTok on.

5. Review Potential Security Alerts

Your login security should be fairly good now, but it’s also important to monitor any unusual activity as a preemptive measure. Fortunately, TikTok makes it easy to review any recent “security events” (as it calls them) and do something about suspicious ones.

Apple Redesigns its Online Store

Late on Tuesday, Apple’s website went down for a brief period of time, prompting speculation that the company might launch new products.

Not this time, though — when the site went back up, it had a new “Store” tab on the top left side. Apple’s website had a “Store” tab some years ago, but it was removed in a redesign. Now, however, the Store tab leads to a thoroughly redesigned storefront, which lists all major Apple product categories but also has an overview of deals and new items, as well as a few support links and documents.

Clicking on a particular product category will open a page that lets you horizontally scroll through cards with major sub-categories, which is similar to the way it’s done on the Apple Store app on iOS. Try browsing it on a phone and you’ll see what I mean.

Finally, choosing a particular sub-category will lend you on that product’s webpage which appears to be identical or at least fairly similar to how it looked before the redesign.

With these third-party apps, users can provide their smartphones and tablets with protection strong enough to combat most cyber attacks, by strengthening your android smartphone’s defenses to a point where your drops risk considerably, these third-party apps give your device multiple layers of defense.

1. LastPass

The cornerstone of most security on the web is a strong password. The trouble is, most people don’t actually use a strong password because it’s way too hard to memorize a string of random letters, numbers, and special characters for every account you have. But with a good password manager, you only have to memorize one strong password, then the app will take care of everything else for you.

LastPass is a robust password management tool available on almost every OS, browser, and mobile platform on the market. LastPass puts you in control of your online life – making it easy to keep your critical information safe and secure so you can access it whenever you want, wherever you are. Save all your passwords, addresses, credit cards and more in your secure vault and LastPass will automatically fill in your information when you need it.

Thanks to hackers, phishers, and bitcoin miners, there are now many different types of malware designed specifically for Android. To make matters worse, Google has had a hard time preventing such attacks from penetrating the Play Store — their new Play Protect system only has a real-time detection rating of 48.5%. For context, the industry average is 94.8%.

Norton Mobile Security for Android
Your Android™ smartphone or tablet can carry a lot of personal information and may be vulnerable to cyber threats. Norton Mobile Security helps deliver powerful, effective protection for your Android device and personal information against stealthy new mobile cyber threats and online scams.

3. NordVPN

As we communicate online, our data travels from our devices through our internet provider and onto the servers hosting the apps and websites we’re using. If this data isn’t protected, hackers can intercept it at any point along the way, which makes VPNs a very valuable tool.

A good VPN service provides you a secure, encrypted tunnel for online traffic to flow. Nobody can see through the tunnel and get their hands on your internet data. NordVPN is the best VPN if you’re looking for peace of mind when on public Wi-Fi. Securely access personal information or work files, encrypt your internet connection, and keep your browsing history private. Buy a VPN to get online privacy and security.

By using each of these apps, you are adding layers of security to your device. Your defenses are no longer dependent on just one app — rather, a multitude of fail-safes.

Free VPN on Your iPhone

VPN service is almost an essential tool these days, as it helps protect your online activities, gives you online privacy, and anonymity, sending emails, shopping online, or paying bills. VPNs also help keep your web browsing anonymous.

A good VPN can block ads, prevent tracking cookies, encrypt your internet traffic for better security, and even spoof your device’s location to bypass geo-restrictions — all things you should be concerned about in the age of government snooping and Facebook data mining.

But most of the good VPN services charge a monthly subscription or at least a one-time installation fee. One of the best free VPN was Opera VPN, which was shut down on April 30, 2018.

They are a lot of free VPN service on the internet, but on the tutorial, I will recommend a VPN service called Windscribe. Windscribe offers up to 10 GB of VPN-protected traffic per month completely free, and they don’t keep any permanent logs of your traffic. It’s incredibly easy to install and set up Windscribe on your smartphone, and it’s got all the features you need out of a VPN.

1. Install Windscribe

To start, head to the App Store and search for “Windscribe VPN,” then install the app.

2. Create an Account & Verify Your Email

When you first open Windscribe, you’ll be prompted to either log in or create a new account with the service. If this is your first time using Windscribe, tap “Create Account,” then select the 10GB tab on the following screen. From there, enter any user name you’d like in addition to a password, then make sure to use a valid email address in the Email field.

Immediately after creating the account, switch over to your favorite email app. Windscribe will have sent you a confirmation email, so tap the “Confirm” button to finalize setup. Validating your email address like this will give you a huge bump in monthly data allowance — from 2 GB up to 10 GB — and it’s still completely free.

3. Let Windscribe Create a VPN

Next, open the Windscribe app again and iOS will ask if you’d like to let the app add a VPN configuration to your phone. Tap “Allow” on this prompt, then enter your passcode.

5. Connect to the VPN Service

At this point, you’re ready to start using the VPN. By default, “Best Location” will be selected, but you can choose another VPN server if you’re trying to bypass geo-restrictions in an app like Netflix. You’ll notice that some of the localities are greyed out in the free version, but there are still plenty of choices. You can even tap the down-arrow to the right of a country or location if you’d like to connect to a server in a specific city.

Keep Your Connection Secure with the very best of VPN Service.
