Exciting news from the world of African music and culture: Rolling Stone has officially launched Rolling Stone Africa, and who better to grace the cover of their inaugural issue than the legendary Fela Kuti?

Announced on July 16, this new venture is a collaboration with MWANKOM Group and marks a significant step in celebrating African culture. Rolling Stone Africa aims to showcase the continent’s vibrant cultures and diverse voices.

Since 1967, Rolling Stone has amplified groundbreaking artists and cultural trailblazers across the US, Europe, and now Africa,” the company stated.

DR Bellegarde-Smeralda, co-founder and CEO of Rolling Stone Africa, shared why Fela Kuti was the perfect choice for their first cover: “Fela’s legacy as a pioneer of Afrobeat and a champion of African culture, talent, and heritage is undeniable. His music, perspective, and love for Africa continue to inspire all, not just in music, which is why we chose to launch with him as our first icon.

Samuel Panda, the magazine’s chief technology officer, added, “Africans are everywhere, and love for Africa extends beyond the continent. Our goal is to connect and celebrate the global African community. Our subscriptions will be affordable, our content relatable, and we will shine a light on artists, big and small, who represent the African spirit.

Rolling Stone’s connection with Africa isn’t new. They launched Rolling Stone South Africa in 2011 and have been highlighting African pop stars, especially with the global rise of Afrobeats. Last year, the magazine named icons like Fela Kuti, Youssou N’Dour, Miriam Makeba, and Burna Boy in its list of the 200 Best Singers of All Time. Burna Boy, Rema, Wizkid, Black Sherif, Kabza De Small, and Uncle Waffles made Rolling Stone’s list of top Afropop songs in December 2022.

Looking ahead, Rolling Stone Africa will focus on digital engagement with plans for a mobile app from MWANKOM Group to provide readers with expanded content. So, get ready to dive into the rich world of African music and culture with Rolling Stone Africa!
